Putting it simply it's how the game knows where the line of the bullet intercepts with the target. It's used to determine if the bullet fired from the weapon hits it's target. Also a hitscan weapon is one that instantly hits the target once it's shot. Alot of sniper rifles in games are hitscan weapons because it makes contact as soon as it's triggered.
