You could use more RAM thats for sure. Id say about 3GB. Your PC specs are ok but for someone to correctly reply to this thread they would need to know the following:
Motherboard Used: (FSB etc...)
Type of RAM: (Speed etc...)
If you carefully check what your motherboard is and check its specs and your memories specs you will see for yourself if you got a good buy or not.
Until then you can try the following:
Disable some unnecessary operating services running. Always have your drivers for everything on your pc up to date. You can download a driver update program free cough cough these days on the internet

I remember seeing a XP GAME OS which was tweaked for gamers. Im sure thats still around. Its XP tweaked to the max for people who love to game without any other unecessary crap running.
